Closet Built Ins

31 Jan

There is no thrift in this post. None what so ever. But I just couldn’t help myself it’s just so pretty! This built in closet is every girls “California Closet” dream. It would even look great in a room where there are no closets to put this built in in…I would throw this up in my bedroom as my closet period. The husband would be over joyed;)

Restoring Hardwood Floors

31 Jan

So often the thing I love most in an old house are the floors.  There is nothing better than an original fir floor from 100 years ago mixed with some modern new elements.  The problem with them while renovating is changing the floor plan.  It’s difficult to salvage the floor when the layout of the home has changed.  That is where this great company in Vancouver comes into play.  They specialize in reclaimed hardwood and you can buy direct from them to match what you need to match…patch what you need to patch! Definitely check them out if you are struggling with the “do we salvage the floors or get new hardwood” dilemma.

Under the stairs storage

13 Jan

All I have to say about this is “why not?!?” Most of the time there is a whole lot of dead space below the stairs and a lot of the time it’s in an area like the Foyer which is always begging for addition storage.  This idea of a bookshelf is so pretty and you could add baskets to hold all the gloves and hats of the winter season.  An additional idea is to use the space for a built in shoe cupboard.  God I wish I had one of those!

Spiral Staircase

4 Jan

So many apartments these days have two floors but no space for a grand staircase, so developers (particularly in the late 80’s/early 90’s) put in spiral staircases for design aesthetic and to fill the void.  The problem with these staircases are that they scream their age! I don’t know if I am the only person who has an aversion to them but I have tried and tried to think of an alternative but alas, human teleportation hasn’t been developed yet (p.s. can you believe it?!?).  This is the first spiral staircase I have loved!  So there is an alternative to 80’s contemporary after all!
